Sunflower husk (pellets)
Sunflower husk (pellets) is relatively cheap, but a valuable product. Due to the high level of protein and vitamins, it is an important nutrition in the diet of farm animals. It is a valuable source of dietary fiber and therefore it is very often added in the fodder. The percentage of crude fiber in sunflower husk ( reaching up to 50%) makes the use of sunflower husk important when feeding ruminants and rabbits. The value of the product stretches out beyond being an additive to compound feed. It is the main component in mushroom compost, as well as raw material in the production of ethyl alcohol and fodder yeast. Sunflower husk is also used as a fertilizer. Furthermore, sunflower husk is used as an environmentally friendly biofuel. It does not emit any harmful chemical substances or odor when burnt (unlike oil, gas, etc.). Another important advantage of using sunflower husk over fossil fuels is that the pellets are not explosive and are not subject to auto-ignition when the temperature increases. Fuel pellets are different from ordinary firewood, because of their high dryness and greater density. These qualities provide a large thermal capacity compared to wood (approximately 1.5 times greater). Sunflower husk pellets are used for domestic heating, industrial facilities, greenhouses and drying systems.
One of the major advantages of pellets is their high and constant bulk density, which makes it relatively easy to transport the bulk product over long distances. Owing to the correct shape, small size and homogeneousconsistency of the product, granules can be poured through a special hose that allows automating the processes of loading and unloading and also burning of this kind of fuel.
For the efficient use of fuel pellets a special type of furnace is required: a pellet stove.
