Wood pellets are quite valuable environmentally friendly fuel. Even in today’s world where oil, natural gas, coal and many other types of fossil fuels are so popular, wood pellets occupy an important place as endowed with many positive qualities.
Wood pellets are made of wood waste or low-quality wood by careful processing. Wood processing includes several phases .For a start raw material is carefully crushed in special crasher machines to such a state that the timber becomes similar to flour. The resulting powdery mass enters special dryers where it is dried so that the moisture of raw material decrease, reaching 7-10% of the total mass. It has been proved that such a degree of moisture is optimal for wood pellets. After drying the timber enters the pellet press, where, respectively, it is compressed and granulated. When heated, lignin, an agent in the composition of the timber, melts and glues the rest components. The compressed wood has a higher density and, consequently, increases and the amount of heat produced by the combustion of the material. As a result of the refining processes pellets of cylindrical shape are obtained. The size of the pellets may vary, but it is 0.5-1 cm basically.
About wood pellets
In our country pellets are generally produced from coniferous trees, but pellets of hardwood are considered to be of the highest quality (such timber requires special processing).
Wood pellets are a good alternative to ordinary firewood, because when burned they emit 1.5 times more heat than wood. This is approximately as much as the heat released by the same amount of coal, and in this case, wood pellets are much cheaper than coal. The density of wood pellets is about 1.5, which means that although there are obtained from wood, they sink in water (as opposed to the wood itself). Wood pellets are not particularly sensitive to atmospheric moisture, but in direct contact with water can absorb more than their own weight. Usually wood pellets are produced in polyethylene or polypropylene containers of very different volume. Such packaging protects the product from moisture.
Wood pellets are environmentally friendly fuel. During the combustion of pellets exactly as much carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere as it would be transferred at the natural decay of the given amount of timber, thus, this kind of fuel does not break the cycle of carbon dioxide. Also, at the combustion of wood pellets, the atmosphere is not subject to harmful (toxic) substances, and this is also a huge advantage.Wood pellets are not explosive and do not ignite spontaneously.
